Sclerotherapy for Non-Surgical Spider Vein Treatment

Those web-like, blue or red veins traversing your legs don’t have to be an eyesore or a health risk. With sclerotherapy, you can finally get rid of those visible veins for good.

How They Form

Despite all the trouble they cause, spider veins form in a rather simple way. Inside all of your veins, there is a valve that allows blood to move in a single direction: towards the heart where that blood will be re-oxygenated. When this valve is damaged or malfunctions in some way, it allows blood to move in the wrong direction. Once this happens, blood will begin to pool in the vein as it can’t move forward or backward. This pooling then begins to affect the vein wall, and it will begin to bulge from the pressure and appear just under your skin.

Who They Affect

There are various reasons that some people develop spider veins and others don’t. For one, unfortunately, women are more likely to develop spider veins. Partly, this is due to the fact that hormones can play a role in their development. That’s why pregnant women are more at risk for developing spider veins. Genetics and family history will also factor into whether you suffer from spider veins.

Also, if you stand or sit for extended periods of time without breaks, then you could also be more at risk for developing spider veins. Basically, this is because standing makes it a little harder for your veins to pump that blood back to your heart due to gravity and its pressure. Last, getting older factors into spider veins, as you calf muscles weaken, making it harder for them to help pump blood back to the heart.

The Symptoms

Most of the time, spider veins won’t present with any symptoms other than appearing under your skin. Due to the aesthetic issue that they cause, many women opt for sclerotherapy as a non-surgical solution to spider veins.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Luckily, you don’t have to live with visible veins. Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment that works to get rid of spider veins. For sclerotherapy treatment, our doctor will inject a small amount of a chemical into your vein. This chemical will cause the affected vein wall to swell shut completely so that blood can no longer travel through it. Your body will then turn that vein into scar tissue and the spider vein will be no more.
