Which Psoriasis Treatment is Right for Me?

Skin conditions can be a nuisance—at the very least. Psoriasis can have many unpleasant symptoms, including discomfort, and discoloration. After receiving a psoriasis diagnosis, one is likely curious about treatment options. Psoriasis treatment comes in dozens of forms, including oral medications, topical creams, and more. The experts at Nunnally Dermatology can help determine the best treatment plan for you.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic, incurable skin condition that causes thick, irritated, itchy scabbing across your body. The patches can be red, silver, or white in color and are caused by your immune system overproducing cells in your body. Some people have small patches, while some experience larger affected areas.

Topical Psoriasis Treatment Options

Again, the right treatment for you will ultimately be determined during a consultation. However, here are some general treatments for psoriasis.

  • Steroid Creams – Steroid creams can decrease itching, inflammation, and help to reduce the overproduction of skin cells.
  • Retinoids (Prescription) – This ointment is rich in Vitamin A, which can improve your condition. However, it doesn’t work as fast as steroid creams.
  • Salicylic Acid – Salicylic acid is another ointment. It helps remove the “scales” of psoriasis and is best used on small treatment areas.
  • Phototherapy or Light Therapy
  • Oral Medications – To improve your overall skin condition and improve the way your immune system works.

What About Natural Treatments and Lifestyle Changes?

Diet changes can sometimes help, especially when used alongside other psoriasis treatment options. Decreasing foods, like dairy or gluten, can improve your skin from the inside out. Drinking more water can help as well.

Choosing a Treatment

Topical creams are conventional treatments for your psoriasis.Other treatments are better used on smaller areas. Figuring out the right psoriasis treatment option for you can be tricky. Before you choose any form of treatment, it’s important that you see a specialist. Talking through all of the treatments above with a dermatologist is your best course of action. There are a few tests that can be taken at our dermatologist’s office to help figure out the origins of your condition, and therefore help you decide which treatment options are the best for you.
