How Do You Get Lasting Hair Reduction?

Are you tired of constantly shaving and waxing away unwanted hair? Our team at Nunnally Dermatology of Baton Rouge, LA, offers hair reduction services so you can enjoy silky-smooth skin year-round, without the hassle.

How Do You Get Lasting Hair Reduction?

Intense Pulsed Light Treatment

Intense Pulsed Light, often shortened to IPL, is a hair reduction system we use here. The most advanced IPL system currently available is the Palomar Starlux. It’s an ideal choice for patients who want lasting hair removal results.

How Does This System Work?

IPL delivers gentle pulses of light directly into the targeted hair follicles. When the follicles absorb this light, it gets converted into heat. This conversion damages the follicles, loosening the current hair and stopping the cells that produce new hair growth.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Various individual factors can play a role in this. Your hair tone and texture, and how large of an area you want to be treated, can all contribute to your treatment schedule. Regardless of these factors, patients should always expect to come in for multiple treatments for the best possible results. Between four to eight treatments is the average.

Why Are Multiple Treatments Necessary?

Throughout the hair growth cycle, your various hair follicles will be in different hair-production phases at any point. Hair that is currently in the growth phase is the easiest to treat with IPL.

A treatment series, with each treatment appropriately spaced apart, gives us the best chance at treating each hair follicle when it’s at its most receptive stage. It will also help us make sure we don’t miss any section of the treatment area. The end goal is results that last for the long run, so we want to make sure your treatment is thoroughly and effectively carried out.

Hair Reduction FAQ

1. What Areas Can I Have Treated?

Other than around the eyes, IPL can be used to treat just about any desired location. If you want to make sure this treatment is a good fit for what you want, we’d be happy to talk through your individual goals with you.

Common areas patients seek hair reduction for can include the following.

Certain Areas of the Face

The upper lip area is one of those frustrating locations where patients may try to bleach, tweeze, or shave away unwanted hair. If you’re battling hair on your upper lip, and the hair color is dark enough for the IPL treatment to effectively target it, this could be a great, lasting solution. For patients who shave their face, this treatment can provide a gentle alternative and may protect you from accidentally cutting your face with a razor.

Sometimes stubborn hairs can repeatedly pop up around the chin or under the jawline. Since these hairs tend to be thick and grow back quickly, many patients grow frustrated with having to constantly remember to tweeze them. Once the follicles are treated, you should be able to enjoy smoother facial skin and less annoyance.

Around the Ears

Rather than trimming this hair, why not have it professionally treated so you don’t have to worry about it?

Your Back

Patients of any gender can benefit from IPL treatment, and anyone can find themselves dealing with unwanted back hair. Depending on how much back hair is present, waxing if off consistently can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. If you would like your upper, lower, or full back treated, reach out to us so we can get a treatment plan scheduled.

Armpits

Armpits are one of the most common treatment areas. Many patients who seek out this treatment don’t want armpit hair, but do want to ditch the constant cycle of waxing or shaving.

After treatment, it can be exciting for patients to be able to spontaneously hit the beach or just enjoy daily life without dedicating time and energy into making sure their armpits are shaved beforehand.

Legs

Legs are another very popular treatment area. Legs can be a frustrating area to shave. While for many people it’s part of their daily routine, when you’re in a rush there’s always the risk of accidentally cutting yourself or missing a whole section. If you prefer to have your legs hair-free, we can help make that a lasting reality for you.

Bikini Line

After a long winter, some people may find themselves dreading swimsuit season. Swimsuit season can mean a lot of extra grooming, which can be inconvenient or uncomfortable. This treatment can help you maintain your bikini line, so you can look forward to the beach instead of frustration.

2. What Are the Causes of Excessive Hair Growth?

If you’re concerned that the hair growth you’re experiencing could be an indicator of an underlying issue, it may be a good idea to get checked up by your doctor. While we’re happy to treat the unwanted hair, we wouldn’t want you to ignore something that should be looked into.

There are many possible causes for excessive hair growth, but we’ll go over a few common ones today.

Certain Medications

If your hair production noticeably changed after starting a new medication, that could be one of the factors. Some medications can affect hair growth.

This doesn’t mean you should stop your medication! Always consult with your doctor before making that kind of decision. If this is determined to be the cause of your problem, we’d be happy to treat the hair growth and help get it under control.

Genetics

Sometimes hair growth is a family thing. If you have close family members with thick hair, the chances of you having thick hair increase. For some patients, this can be a good and bad thing at the same time. By having certain areas treated with IPL, you can keep thick hair where you want it and get rid of it wherever you don’t.

Hormonal Imbalances

If you have hormonal irregularities, that can present itself through excessive hair growth. A blood test can be a helpful way of knowing whether your hormones are in a healthy, balanced range.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

If you have PCOS, you likely have a sex hormone imbalance. The symptoms of PCOS can range dramatically. Some women may notice little to no symptoms, while others can experience an excess of hair growth among other symptoms like irregular periods, the presence of cysts, and painful menstrual cycles.

3. What Are the Benefits of IPL Hair Reduction?

Reduce Your Risk for Ingrown Hair

Most patients know the feeling of noticing irritation and realizing they have an ingrown hair. This painful condition can affect one hair follicle at a time, or multiple all at once. They can be sore, irritating, and can negatively affect the texture of your skin. Most hair removal methods carry the risk of ingrown hairs.

That’s where IPL differs. IPL can not only prevent ingrown hairs, it is sometimes even used to help treat them. By targeting the hair growth at its source, it stops the ingrown hair from coming back.

Smoother Skin

After going through all the trouble of shaving, it can be frustrating to feel the bumpy stubble growing back the next day. IPL can help you maintain that smooth, hairless skin texture so you can say goodbye to the stubble.

A Time-Saver in the Long Run

IPL treatment is a temporary time investment that can offer long-lasting results. Whether it’s daily shaving or frequent waxing, either option is something you have to consistently make time for. A longer-lasting treatment means there’s more time for you to live in the moment instead of worrying about hair removal.

Shaving Isn’t Very Effective

If you use disposable razors to do most of your shaving, you may notice that while they get the job done, they rarely offer a perfectly smooth shave. Even when the results are good, neither the results nor the razors last that long.

Shaving the entire body can be exhausting, and people are often surprised when they take a look at how much money they actually spend on disposable razors each year.

Waxing Can Be Problematic

It’s no secret that waxing can be pretty uncomfortable, but the risk of discomfort can go up even more when people try to save some money and wax themselves. Improper technique can mean less effective waxing, so someone may have to wax the same area twice if they don’t get it right the first time. Not getting the temperature right could put you at risk of a wax burn as well.
